Infrared sauna, autoimmune, breast implant illness
Well, it definitely was for me, and close to 50,000 women that joined a worldwide Facebook group.
Breast implants are a controversial subject that are still advertised as safe by plastic surgeons, doctors, and the medical community when in fact they can cause many health issues.
When you hear about breast implants, doctors generally focus on the physical look and local complications..
without disclosing the potential foreign body reaction.
We are told that implants do not cause problems, so when problems arise, our doctors look in other directions.
Problems may also stem from adjuvant effects of silicone toxicity, heavy metal exposure, how the implants release gel bleed, the development of biofilm around implants (potentially causing low grade chronic bacterial infections, a chronic state of inflammation, capsular contracture, etc), and how the implants are oxidized in the body (contributing to free radical/oxidative damage).
All of these factors weaken the immune system which can result in a systemic cascade of negative health issues...Such as autoantibodies and autoimmune diseases, endocrine dysfunction, thyroid/adrenal problems, gut dysbiosis, bacterial and viral infections, and more. Breast implants consist of two large bags made of 40+ chemicals including heavy metals located within the outer silicone shell as well as the silicone gel filling (saline implants also contain a silicone shell). These abrasive substances are toxic and inflammatory to our cells and body processes.
Common symptoms include:
Essentially, no matter what type of implant you have, internally there is an artificial disturbance occurring, causing your immune system to switch into overdrive, affecting many other systems and eventually creating a cascade of systemic dysregulation.
So, what can be done to heal?
Every woman's experience with BII is different, there is no 'one size fits all'. This can be a complex journey back to health, I know, I've been there! First and foremost, explant should be considered.
Before explant surgery:
There is plenty that can be done before explant surgery. With my patients I find using mind-body techniques, herbal medicine and nutritional medicine can reduce symptoms and prepare the body for healing.
After explant surgery:
Is the time to bring the body back into balance by supporting the detoxification pathways, lymphatic system, immune system regulation, hormonal balancing and digestive support. Some of my go to herbal medicines include Calendula and St Marys Milk Thistle, as well as key nutrients such as choline, to name just a few, that can make a world of difference to recovery time and success.
